Book Review: Poor is no Excuse

Jul 29, 2013 | Uncategorized

If you are the type who cannot wait to find out my thoughts about the book, then I will not let you suffer anymore–its a great book! Now that I got that out of the way, let me tell you why.

Written by the subject of the book, Dr. Jun Vencer with John Allan, who, honestly I do not know; and revised and updated by  Bishop Jovelio Galaraga. The book is obviously about the life of this man, Jun Vencer. From living in poverty in the Visayas to being one of the most influential evangelical of this generation.

From the back of the book reads this:

Jun Vencer began life in the Barangay of Nueva Sevilla in the Philippines. He came from a broken home, experienced poverty as a child, and learned to survive as a runaway kid on the streets of Iloilo City. But today he is a lawyer, an evangelical pastor, a global leader, and a respected author, preacher and teacher. This is his story–the story of how Jesus Christ transformed his life. He became the first non-western leader elected as International Director of World Evangelical Fellowship (now Alliance) with a constituency of over 150 million evangelical believers worldwide. Jun Vencer is convince thagt even deprived Third World countries can make a gigantic contribution to the mission of the church–to the transformation of nations–for “poor is no excuse.”

This book has been in my book shelf for two years now. Jun Vencer has spoken to CBN Asia’s Management Committee of which I am a part of. Since that first time to hear him, I have admired his wisdom. I looked forward to hearing him talk again, which was not often. So when I had the opportunity to have a copy of his book, autographed by the way, I looked forward to reading it. It took me a long while to start reading though and when I did after over two years, I could not put it down.

I read the book daily during my nearly an hour trip to the office. It took me almost a week to finish the book which is not that long. On the first day I read it, i finished two chapters. I was almost in tears by the end of the trip because of how he narrated how he lost his younger brother to appendicitis. The next chapters were very inspiring as well and a challenge to many Christian leaders of today.

I can only give praises to the book. Sadly I do not know if this is available in book stores. Will update this post as soon as I get information on where to get it.
