Keys to Growing in Godly Wisdom

How can we grow in the knowledge and wisdom of God? One good way is through experience.

I vividly recall the  first time I ever spoke in a courtroom as an attorney for a paying client. I had won the Trial Award at my law school graduation, so I thought I was ready—until I stood up in that courtroom and suddenly realized that all my book learning was useless without the actual experience of trying a real case.  There is only one way to get that experience, and it was through my mistakes that I learned some very valuable lessons.

We can also grow in wisdom through diffculties. Paul had been shipwrecked, beaten, stoned, and left for dead. Yet he writes in Romans 5:3-4: We also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.

In Greek, the word character means “tested and approved.” You have gone through trying times and didn’t wilt under  fire. You came back proven and solid, and you understand who you are in Christ. Whatever circumstance you face, you know nothing can stand against you.

That’s why Paul goes on to say in Romans 5:5, Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.  is is the voice of experience.  Now this is the voice of someone who knows he can trust God, no matter what happens.

Faith is spelled R-I-S-K. You are out of your comfort zone.  The only thing you know is that God said it. And He wants His people to say, “That’s all I need, God. If You have said it, I will go.”  Then we trust God to see us through.

James 1:5 tells us, If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. We need to humble ourselves and say, “God, I don’t know what I’m doing; please guide me like a child.” He won’t get mad when we ask; instead, He promises to give us wisdom liberally.

Finally, we  find this key in Proverbs 11:30: He who wins souls is wise. God has chosen and appointed us to preach His Gospel to every nation, tongue and tribe. By winning souls we prove our wisdom, showing that our true treasure is heaven. God bless you.

Scripture is quoted from the NKJV. This teaching was given during a CBN staff chapel meeting.
