Quiet Times Saves Lives

Quiet times. Daily devotions. Time with the Lord. We call it a lot of ways. Whatever we call it. This moment has a purpose. It heals. It soothes. It refreshes the soul. It saves lives–my life and yours.

I learned this the hard way. For the most part of my Christian lifetime. I did not have a quiet time. Its kind of hypocritical because I even teach the value of this exercise in our church. In actual application I did not value it.

God said in this passage in Joshua chapter 1, verse 8: “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Meditating on “the law” day and night. Now who wants to do that? Just the mention of “the law” sounds so boring and tedious. But God’s laws are not just laws. They are life! God had a purpose for dishing out such words. In our own immaturity and biases, we lose any form of motivation to meditate on “the laws” of God. We fell into Satan’s trap.

But God is good! He used circumstances in my life for me “discover” His laws again. I found that they gave me life. I always remind God about John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Little did I know that the reason I was not experiencing His full life was because I did not know His word–His law.

After this realization, the need for God’s word grew in my heart. I started to “meditate” on it. I’m not yet doing it “day and night” but I’m getting there. His “laws” allowed me to get through my worries, fears and concerns. God’s laws gave me a deeper meaning to this life. Man-made laws did not satisfy me. Only God’s did.
