The Road to Perfection

Apr 16, 2013 | Uncategorized

Matthew 5:48, But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.

The road to perfection is a bumpy ride. Its got zigs and zags. Uphills and downhills. The most difficult part is the passage in the Bible that implies the course one has to take to reach perfection–loving your enemies.

What does an enemy do? They try to take you down. They will hurt you and take away who or what you love. They hate you and scheme against you. If you can love those who hate you everything else is easier to love, which leads to perfection. So, what do we do then?

Simple, love your enemies, there is no other way. Yes, that sounds very difficult but let me invite you to  check out Matthew 5:44-45, “But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.

This was how David acted towards King Saul’s aggression towards him. Remember when David was hiding in a cave and Saul rested at the same place but did not know that he was there? David did out what Jesus would teach hundreds of years later. He spared Saul’s life and glorified God in the process. King Saul was hounding David to kill him. David, even though he was the better warrior, chose to uphold his love for his enemy, the father of his best friend.

Why do we even want to achieve perfection? Because Jesus said so! Perfection is not served on a silver platter. We have to labor for it. We need to persevere and work hard. This is the way Jesus wanted it. Perfection is Jesus completing his work in us: Philippians 1:6, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Let me be clear, perfection will only be achieved when Jesus returns. He will complete everything. If we do not obey Jesus’ command to be perfect, which is a process, then we wont reach it and His work will not be complete.
